by Emily B. from Virtuous Daughters, March 2009~Volume 8, Number 12 May I tell you about some of the ways we choose our reading material? The criteria may be different for different families, but the first rule should be the same for everyone: if you aren’t sure about something, ask your parents! If there is a question as to the content of a particular book, let your mom (or dad) look at it first, to decide if it is something they want you to read. They know what decision will be best for you. Maybe they will tell you they feel a particular book is not appropriate for you at this point in your life. Be willing to abide by their decision, even if the book is one that all your friends tell you is the greatest. Our parents have good reasons for the decisions they make! The Bible is the most important book anyone can read! If you have time to do other reading throughout the day, that means you also have time to read the Bible. One of our “rules” is to read the Bible each day before reading other material!
It has been said that “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” but actually, what is written on the back cover or inside flaps may give you an idea of what type of book it will be. In choosing books, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind. Does the book glorify sin? Does it promote ungodly attitudes like rebellion or disrespect for authority? If so, it’s safe to assume that it wouldn’t be good reading for a Christian. Are the characters people you would want to emulate? Does the book encourage you in your Christian walk? If so, chances are the book will be worth reading? …As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 12:12 “…Of making of books there is no end…” There are so many books in this world—more than one person could read in a lifetime! By choosing to read and purchase only the best books, we can make wise use of our time and be edified and encouraged by reading profitable, godly books! Comments are closed.
