by Susanna from Virtuous Daughters, August 2007~Volume 7, Number 5 Hello everyone! I enjoy playing instruments and I’m sure many of you do too. I play mostly flute, but I also play piano and enjoy them both! I take flute lessons along with several other girls from a young lady in our church. She has taught us many things over the years, but one of the main things she has taught us is to keep our focus on God, and to give Him the glory. After all, God is the One Who gave us the talent and skill to play, but it’s just so easy to forget that and take the credit ourselves! I find that when I play for others, I think more about them and their needs instead of myself. Every year, instead of a recital, my flute teacher gives us the opportunity to play for elderly people. We go to retirement homes about two or three times a year and play for them, and then we also have a special program for the widows in our church, which we do once or twice a year. For the “Widows’ Tea,” as we call it, we think of a theme we’d like to use, and then plan our program accordingly. This last year’s theme was our favorite one so far. Our theme was “The Four Seasons.” Some of you have probably heard of “The Four Seasons” by Vivaldi. We not only used the song, but we also used the title and correlated it with Scripture. Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever.” There are many changes that we experience in life, but through it all, Jesus Christ remains the same. It was a very encouraging evening, and we were able to glorify God and minister to the widows at the same time!
I’m sure there are many other ways to minister to elderly people. A lot of you probably already have good ideas and are ministering and glorifying God with your music. If so, keep it up! “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”—James 1:27 Comments are closed.
