by Tiffany S. from Virtuous Daughters, July 2006~Volume 6, Number 7 We can learn so much from the lives of others. Thankfully, the Word of God is brimming full of examples of godly men and women for us to learn and benefit from. Here are just a few: Ruth
Ruth’s life was a remarkable example of dedication. Her desires were simply that of Naomi, her mother-in-law. This can be seen through the words she spoke to her, “And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”—Ruth1:16–17. Later, when Naomi was speaking of Ruth, she assured her that, “. . . All the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.”—Ruth 3:11b Do others know us for being virtuous daughters? One of the biggest indications of that is our submission to and love for our parents. Mary I’ve always appreciated Mary’s examples of trust and responsibility. Her response to the angel’s news also indicates humility and willingness: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. . . . My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.”—Luke 1:38, 46–48 Miriam n Exodus 2:1–9, the account of her watching Moses in the basket is clearly given. When I thought about Miriam’s situation, I put myself in her shoes. How would I feel? I asked. I quickly realized that I would feel afraid! Not only was her little brother’s life in danger, but she too was breaking the new law. She was probably very concerned when the pharaoh’s daughter found Moses, and I’m sure she was shivering when she went to speak with her. However, she was faithful to obey her parents’ instructions, and look at what benefits were reaped. Moses grew to be a great man of God. It is vital that when we are given a task, we too respond correctly by being obedient, attentive, and diligent. There are many other examples in the Bible for us to learn from.
